Changing a field in the Sales Table

Hi all, newb question, can I change an existing custom field in the Sales Table in Production while people are still using Axapta? The field is not used by any other code. I was just wondering if the Save/Sync/Compile would affect people currently using Axapta. Or do I need to wait until tonight when everybody has gone home?
