I am writing some integration scripts using WCF and AIF services to extract data from AX for external systems. Some of these could be written much more easily by connecting directly to the SQL database and querying the tables directly. An example would be that I need to extract a list of activities for each project. The resulting list could be several thousand rows. I understand that this would bypass the AOS logic for company and security etc. Appart from that, is there any reason why I shouldn't do it. Do people query the database directly in real life? I can't find much on the net about it. There are methods in X++ to talk to SQL directly, so I guess there are cases where this is OK? I'm looking to get a balance between best practice and reality. Any comments welcome.
