Windows Client Dynamics Ax 2012 R2 not working with non R2 versions and vice versa?

Hi!

I have just installed DAX 2012 R2 on a VM and I'm trying to access it from my computer using configuration files which doesn't seem to work. I was wondering if it's because an R2 server cannot be accessed by a non R2 Client. I have also tried to access other VMs running older versions of DAX 2012 using the R2 client and this doesn't work either.

I've been trying to find some official confirmation on this subject from Microsoft without any luck so I was wondering if someone could confirm this for me or let me know of a workaround since I can't have two clients installed in one computer and I need to access both R2 and non R2 Ax environments.
